Reaching visible and sustainable results in medical biotechnology requires the concentration of compatible resources. Therefore, there is much hidden potential in joint activities relying on human resource development as well as the utilization of jointly developed research infrastructure. Both are the strong fundaments for high-level sustainable and commercializable research activities.
This project was to realize tangible results on all levels:
a. Human resource development (with minor infrastructural development at both localities) by joint training and transfer of knowledge (individual level - 25 academic fellows/year),
b. carrying our joint research activities involving broader scientific community (intra and inter institutional level).
c. development and validation of research services to be offered at reasonable prices for the constantly growing mass of end-users in the region and beyond (institutional level- 3-5 validated standardized services).
Innovative character
The basic innovative idea behind the project is to present to what extent concerted research activities along with human resource development can contribute, at the same time, to the achievement of short, medium and long-term objectives.
Joint research activities and joint human resource development made it possible:
- to satisfy own needs of transgenic cell and animal lines for all planned research activities
- to create new types of products or services by integrating research capacities,
- to offer research capacity on market base
- to unite fragmented resources in order to establish medical biotech centre that is visible on international level and has true potential to attract other grants as well as companies and investors.
Multiplier effect
Applied medical biotechnology research, especially those with the perspectives of finding curative drugs for frequent diseases, such as cancer, are among the key factors behind the fastest growing industries in the world. The new knowledge and capacity as tangible results of this project will be ideal to be operated as a not-for-profit initiative for own purposes, but also as a for-profit business initiative. Studies revealed applied biotechnology in cancer research is among the new emerging fields of knowledge-based industry that has the highest investment attraction potential and one of the best rate of return. The proposed development can found the stable base for sustainable operation exclusively on self-financing base without external support. The revenue from later business-based operation (international trading of own production) will provide the financial base for continuous development both in terms of product range, equipment and acquire new markets.
